Cigar 101: How to extinguish and relight a cigar

January 23, 2025

Welcome to Cigar 101, a new blog series from Avanti Cigar dedicated to helping cigar lovers – both new and seasoned – enhance their smoking experience. We’ll cover essential tips, techniques, and cigar knowledge to ensure you get the most enjoyment out of every puff.

To kick off the series, we’re tackling an important but often overlooked topic: how to properly extinguish and relight a cigar. Whether you’re enjoying an Avanti Anisette or savoring a Parodi Superiore, mastering these techniques will help you maintain a smooth, flavorful smoke from start to finish.

How to properly extinguish a cigar

Unlike cigarettes, cigars should never be stubbed out. Instead, follow these steps to let your cigar go out naturally.

Rest it in the ashtray. Place your cigar in the tray and allow it to extinguish on its own.

Avoid crushing it. Pressing down on the cigar can create a harsh, lingering odor.

Wait until it stops smoldering. Once completely out, dispose of the stub properly.

How to relight a cigar

If your cigar goes out before you’re finished, relighting it properly ensures you enjoy the full flavor without bitterness.

Remove excess ash. Gently tap off any remaining ash to avoid a stale taste.

Purge the cigar. Blow gently through the unlit cigar to clear out stale smoke.

Toast the foot. Use a butane lighter or cedar spill to evenly warm the foot of the cigar.

Relight slowly. Rotate the cigar while lighting, taking slow puffs to restore an even burn.

With fire-cured, dry-cured Avanti cigars, you get the advantage of a cigar that holds up well even after relighting. Browse our selection to find the perfect cigar for your next slow, satisfying smoke.
